Chickens, Tui, pigs….I can hear them all from the studio where I’ll be staying for the next two weeks at Lochmara Lodge. I can also see the ocean, the beautiful Marlborough Sounds with its soft misty mornings, clam waters, and green hills. Every morning before I start flute-work, I’ll be writing about my day ahead, and the day past, as well as sharing photos.
Day Two, Wednesday. Flat white, Salmon Hash breakfast, calm and sunny, the mellowness of this place is starting to seep in.
What does one do? Spacious free time all day long, amazing food and wonderful lodgings. Do I grasp onto getting busy with productive flute work/recording etc? Or is there a softer approach that infuses the spacious environment with the productive tasks ahead? It’s certainly a style I’m not used to!! As I sink into the daily life here more, I feel the latter will be the style that will help for a creative non-judgmental attitude towards what ‘gets done’ during the day.
Yesterday I had some fun recording improvisations, tweaking them and focusing on the quality of sound and melody. I realized some of my improvs that were really inspirational for me had some flaws…and that my focus on producing an ‘album’ was flawing my approach even more! I recorded four cool improvs, had a beautiful kayak out in the harbour (with flutes ofcourse), and settled into my parenting book. A stunning day.
What lies ahead for Wednesday. I’ll be sitting down to record a few more improvs, as well as recording some of the native sounds that are happening around Lochmara. With these sound recordings I will create flute improvs to layer over, such a the running water, the lapping of waves, and the sounds of the night. And I’m definitely getting in the water again for a swim!!
