International Woodturner’s Symposium

This was without doubt the most inspiring four day ‘wood’ workshop I’ve ever been to! International artists that are masters of their craft, coming together to share their skills and offer tips to the aspiring woodworker – what a treat!!!

I happened to be the youngest person there, potentially by a decade or two, but that didn’t mean I was out of place – it meant I was surrounded by an enormous pool of knowledge and wisdom, and this was just from the participants. The demonstrators provided all the fancy tips and the older folks offered wise words from the workshop.  I also stood out a bit as being the only flute maker, so the novelty offered a few chances to perform for the 160 + attendees.

While I picked up some great new skills, it’s perhaps the ‘basics’ that I’ve been reflecting on mostly, getting back to the simple things and enhancing the quality of the flute’s finish. I’m really looking forward to the next few months in the workshop, and hopefully some gold-leaf flutes will be seen soon!
