Artist in Residency – Day 1 @ Lochmara Lodge

Chickens, Tui, pigs….I can hear them all from the studio where I’ll be staying for the next two weeks at Lochmara Lodge. I can also see the ocean, the beautiful Marlborough Sounds with its soft misty mornings, clam waters, and green hills. Every morning before I start flute-work, I’ll be writing about my day ahead, and the day past, as well as sharing photos.

Day 1, Tuesday. Sunny, still, and warm. My first full day. As I settle into the place and enjoy the wonderful food, coffee, and serenity, I am also thinking and feeling into what I’d like to be involve myself with over my stay. I’ve arrived at two things; recording, and performing. In my studio I am able to record as well as work on some flutes that I brought along with me, and as part of my exchange I will be performing at the lodge restaurant.

I haven’t recorded before, and wish to create a selection of improv flute solos with a variety of flutes. I’m really excited about this, as it will really help me focus on the melodies and quality of what is played, how it’s played, and what the listener might be experiencing. Today I’ll begin this journey.

Performing will take place in the restaurant area, and thankfully I’ve got till Friday to practice for this! Easter looks like a busy time, so I’ll probably have several performances. Phew.

Got questions? Facebook me.

Here are some photos from yesterday, Monday.

Thanks to Kate Spenser for organising this stay for me, it’s come at just the right time
