Contrabass – The Great Grandfather Flute – F# minor

The team at Southern Cross Flutes are in LOVE with the new Contrabass flutes that we are crafting. He’s an example on an F# Contrabass. For those who are familiar with our current Grandfather Flute range, these Contrabass flutes are a lot deeper!

Grandfather ContraBass Flutes are sonorous and deep, bass flutes to slow you down and soften the soul. Physically the largest flutes in the Southern Cross Flutes range, the Grandfather Flutes are designed to sit closer to the body, enabling easy reach to the finger holes. Additionally, the finger holes on Grandfather Flutes are offset to create an ergonomic fit for the fingers.

The F# Contrabass flute is the lowest and largest flute we craft, and we are proud at how easy these Native American Style Contrabass flutes are to play.

About the wood

As a flute wood, Ancient Kauri has a voice that is rich and sweet, giving it great acoustical properties for the lower as well as the higher pitched notes. It’s a fantastic Native American Flute wood, ancient and beautiful. Typically Ancient Kauri is darker brown in colour with a depth of grain that holds shimmering highlights within. This wood has been recovered from swamps in the far north of New Zealand/Aotearoa, where it’s been naturally preserved for over 45,000 years! All Ancient Kauri wood used is certified and carbon dated, and your flute will include this certificate of authenticity.

This flute also features Ash wood, for the mouthpiece, nest, and totem.

Black Walnut – #2 – Distinctive Long Grain

These two pieces are new into the Southern Cross Flutes workshop. They have magnificently striking long grain lines, swirling and captivating. There is space for two flutes to be crafted from these two pieces. You choose!  The codes on the wood #2-1, and #2-2.

My recommendations for these pieces would be either Grandfather Flute (our low bass flutes), or any of our double/drone flute range. These styles of flutes will really allow the grain to stand out.

Have a look at a selection of these styles of flutes below. We will be custom making this flute for you, so we will communicate together to ensure we are choosing the best materials and design for you.

Red Beech Temple Drone – Simply Stunning in Every Way

Check out this amazing double flute here, the Red Beech Temple Drone.

We crafted this double flute for a customer in Australia, and loved every part of it, even if the wood was very difficult to carve! It features an awesome Medicine Wheel made from copper, with a Tiger’s Eye Stone in the middle. The woods were selected to complement each other, and we’ve used Rewarewa for the mouthpiece and in the totems.

Drone Flutes are dual chambered flutes, playing a drone through the left chamber, and melodic playing on the right. This style of double flute originates from the Mayan and Teotihuacan cultures, where it was commonly crafted from clay and played by villagers and priests. It has been adapted into a wooden flute that combines the traditional Mayan dual chambered clay flute, with the totem and slow air chamber from the modern Native American Style Flute.

About the tuning
The tuning of this double flute makes it a highly versatile instrument. While it is precisely tune to the extended minor pentatonic scale, the playable range extends to one and a quarter octave, with a selection of  up to 10 notes. The left hand chamber, known as the drone, plays the fundamental, or root note, which is determined by the flute’s ‘key’. On the drone side we use three wooden plugs allowing you to choose what drone note you’d like to play. You can take them out individually, or remove them all and play melodically on both sides!!

Numerous scales are playable on this flute, including the minor pentatonic scale, jazz scale, major scale, and gypsy scale.

About the wood
Southern beech is a highly decorative hardwood with a natural sheen and lustre. This Southern Beech has a very resonance voice and a lovely medium weight.
